I think THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO is one of the greatest adventure stories ever told, to be sure. It finds time for romance, comedy, history, and even satire in the midst of all the duels, betrayals, poisonings, and high society intrigue (certainly easier to do when you have 1200 pages to work with). It's alternately bleak and triumphant and funny and heartfelt, and the cast of characters is superb.
