No. I've never been bullied by a guy I liked or broken the law with four other miscreants who pushed me around, but I still wrote books that people related to and found enjoyment in. Some people anyway ;)
I think experiences definitely shape who we are, and we can touch readers with a perspective we both share, but we all have our own truths, too, and the books that stay with readers are the ones that make them feel. Be your character, get in her/his head, and make the readers feel like they're watching a movie. You ARE her. How does what's happening make her feel? Write that, and write it good enough that I believe you.
