Alara Levsen asked Heather Demetrios:

When writing I'll meet You There, how hard was it writing about Josh's time in the Marines? While writing about all these experiences and terrible yet very real things did you gain a new perspective on what our soldiers go through?

Heather Demetrios Hi! It was *really* hard writing about Josh's experiences. Those are some very, very dark places to go to. In addition to heartbreaking interviews I did with soldiers (and with my own dad, who is a Marine with PTSD), I also did a lot of digging around online. So I had to watch videos or read about pretty gruesome attacks. It absolutely gave me a deeper understanding of all the levels Marines and Soldiers are going through. I already knew quite a bit because of my own family, but you can't spend so much time with someone like Josh and not feel deeply impacted by these things. I highly recommend The Good Soldiers and Thank You For Your Service by David Finkel.
