My books are all mash-ups of lots of different ideas. Eventually something will spark and I'll start following a trail of story crumbs. In Ruthless Love, George's land deal was a real thing that happened. I changed all the details, of course, but by buying 'useless' land just at the right time, a couple of men got very rich at the expense of the company.
