These pieces of advice are not original, but they are true. Read A LOT! Consider reading only in your chosen genre, at least for some period of time. Find some writer friends that you trust and who will read your drafts and provide an honest (but not brutal) critique. Read your drafts out loud when you can. Walk away from a piece and come back, to gain a very different perspective.
