Desirae Murray The novel has many topic's but the main theme is based on the division between knowledge vs. understanding. In a world were education is easily available to all; people rely on the Thunderhead for everything. This infinite algorithm, has provided enough information within the span of an hour; yet, such knowledge depends upon the individual. Urgency is turned into complacency, as stated in Scythe Curie's gleaning journal: "I often wonder if anyone bothers to look at all that knowledge." When Citra and Rowan visited the art museum with Scythe Faraday; it was a lesson of how artists, during the Age of Mortality, evoked their emotions at that time.

The teen's are not interested at first, because of their wariness of accepting an apprenticeship to a professional scythe. But the offer of immunity is something they cannot ignore; as an ordained scythe, that immunity can safeguard their family. However, only one must win in order for it to become a reality. Therefore, understanding what's at stake determines the knowledge of how the game is played.
Vlad I believe the main theme of life is that life will take many unexpected turns. It helps to have a plan.
AJ To me, the theme seemed more like "you don't always want to do something, but you learn to accept it". Although I am 99% sure that I am wrong.
Joshua I think that the theme is if life puts you in a situation and there seems to be no way out, not to give up and that you can make your own path.
Kaisanna Leight I have found myself asking the exact same question. I always thought that the theme would be, " Stay true to yourself and work hard " but to me that has never sounded right. I hope this helps you in some way, although it is most likely incorrect.
Stormraised I would say it's "kill gently and don't have any fun for that".
Seriously. I admire Shusterman's way of writing and the way he faces difficult subjects (f.e. in Unwind series), but the main idea of this book is just sick. I can even think of more stupid way of dealing with immortality.
