What made you decide to write YA and what sparked the Virals idea?

Kathy Reichs My dog Turk contracted the parvovirus as a puppy. He was extremely sick before he recovered. That ordeal gave my son and I the inspiration for Virals- what could happen if canine parvovirus became contagious to humans? The story sprang from there!
