Marcus Jones asked Kerry Wilkinson:

How much time do you spend doing research on locations etc. before you start writing or do you just stick close to what you already know.

Kerry Wilkinson It depends. For much of the Jessica/Andrew stuff, I'm quite familiar with the main areas of Manchester in which they're generally set, so I get on and write.

Sometimes, if there's a specific scene I need to write and I'm unsure about where it should be, I might start with a bit of Googling and map-checking, then go and look at a place to get a feel for it.

I spent a fair bit of time going around Manchester's Christmas markets in December 2013 because I was working on a novel set during the week between Christmas and new year. It was useful to get a sense of the sounds, smells, bustle and so on.
