Ha! Well, every author does to some extent, even when you try not to. You can't really hide your own sense of humor, for example.
That said, I would make an extremely boring protagonist, so I tend to base my characters on people I know or people I come across in my research.
Which is to say, I take a little bit of this psyche and a little bit of that history, and come up with people who seem very real, but are not based on any one recognizable person.
