Hi, Jonathan. I loved Exorcist Falls as well as Exorcist Road. It seemed as though the shock level was much higher than Children of the Dark (which I love as well :)). I assume you wrote Exorcist Road before COTD. Did that prompt you to write a less intense (but still badass) story like COTD?
Jonathan Janz
Hey, thank you, Joe! I really appreciate that.
Yeah, I actually wrote Exorcist Road in 2014 and Exorcist Falls in early 2015. Then, later in 2015 I wrote Children of the Dark. I don't think I set out to do anything less barbaric in COTD; it was more a function of the stories being very different, with different narrative lenses and different subject matter.
As you know, in COTD things do ratchet up eventually and get awfully violent, but as you alluded to, in the Exorcist stories, we're pretty much steeped in darkness (and violent intensity) from beginning to end. The violence level of my stories is really dependent on the characters and the plot, so you have stories like The Nightmare Girl, which doesn't get violent until the final act, and books like Savage Species, which is dark from the get-go.
Thank you so much for reading them, Joe. I really appreciate the great question and the support! :-)

Hi Jonathan, I just read COTD. My only disappointment is that I did not find this book sooner! Seriously, I loved it so much. One of my favorite kind of books to read is coming of age/horror/scifi. So of course I loved it. My question is did you write Savage Species after COTD? COTD is the only book of yours I have read so far, so does Savage Species continue on that story?
