Like others have said there was just one line that mentioned what happened. I had to go back & make sure I’d read it correctly! But in the version I read on the kindle app there was an author’s note & an additional chapter that explained all of it in detail. The author left it out of the book but after reading it I wasn’t sure why. It was helpful in closing the gap there & understanding Ania’s back story.

I just came in here to ask this question! I think this was confusing in the book. Loved the book, though, and the character of Ania was fascinating. Now I need to find the edition of the book (mentioned by others below/above) that clarifies it.
