Okay here's my theory (as someone who knows little about Shakespeare and is desperate for a happy ending).

In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet fakes their death, and Romeo kills himself because of it. I believe that James knew that if he killed himself, there was a high likelihood that Oliver would do the same afterwards. By leaving this ambiguous note, and reigniting the hope that James could be alive, Oliver will NOT kill himself.

Which still leaves the question, is James really alive?

His last words to Oliver when Oliver asks where he's going: "Hell. Del Norte. Idk." The note he leaves him is described as hastily written, with the last ink of a dying pen. This makes me think that he writes it in his car, just before he was planning to drown himself, as if it was a last minute decision to not go through with suicide.

These are just what I've decided and I want him to be alive :P (less)
