Lew Bolton asked this question about
Ashpet: An Appalachian Tale:
If Ashpet comes from Grimms' Aschenputtel (meaning Cinder Maid), what does Ashpet mean? specifically why is "pet" on the end; ash is evident, but why "pet"? Is it a German derivation? Just a made-up, convenient name? It's the female designation, evidently. In "Jack the Ashypet" an IRish tale by MacManus, Ashypet is the male counterpart. In Richard Chase, The Grandfather Tales, his heroine is Ashpet, also.
