It is never hinted at that he may be autistic, and I believe it would be stated or at least alluded to if Stephen Chbosky intended it to be. I think that that vibe that you're getting is a result of childhood trauma causing a lack of emotional maturity.

Yeah, Charlie has autism but form an autistic POV, i guess it makes the book that little bit more interesting and beautiful, in a way.
