I think you've missed the point. It is based on the author's family. They know they were lucky. There were many extended family and in laws that were talked of in this book who didn't survive.

I did.. But then I read the very end and it turns out it was actually a true story. Then it becomes pretty damn beautiful.
Cheryl
Millions died. Millions.
Susan
Thus the title.....

I did until I read that it was a true story. Why would she change the true story just to make it seem more 'real'? That is what makes the story so great.
Daniela
Millions not enough? :(
Elisabeth
The author says at the end that only 300 of the 30,000 Jews in their town survived. That's a lot of death.

Thanks a lot for ruining the book for me! You should have flagged it for spoilers. You obviously missed the point that this was a TRUE story.

I did, and then I read that it was based on a true story, so I had to let it go.
Rhonda
I understand exactly what you are saying. There were so many deaths and so few "Lucky Ones" during this time that it does seem like fiction that so many of the family survived.
Robyn Karau
Well, nobody did actually die, so why is that unrealistic????
Daniela
No. Even though no one in their immediate family died. What they lived through I would not consider unrealistic or lucky.

Ummm , millions of people died.
Phyllis Meredith
It is HIGHLY unlikely that no one died... but that is why it is titled We Were The Lucky Ones... as a 100% Jewish person, with all Jewish Family to the beginning of time it seems... I can tell you that this was a VERY lucky family indeed
Ellen
Great book. I have never understood how someone could hate someone without knowing them.. attempt to annihilate a generation of humankind. While reading this book, I kept thinking the family will survive just by the book title, but then I wasn't sure.
Kathy
No not at all. I was elated for this family that they did all survive.
Rachel Harper
People they knew died. It really is a miraculous story, but the things that I loved about it was that, when people died, it happened. The author didn't go into it in great detail for shock value.
Alexia
Actually extended members did die and I agree with the other comments that in the end, millions died.

I suppose so. But the title of the book already implies (at least to some degree) that it will be so...at least to the author's direct family. Of course somebody died. But the "Lucky Ones" (thank God) were spared (by destiny, sheer luck or whatever) so that somebody, someday will be able to narrate what happened.
