Michael
Michael asked Michael Finkel:

How would you recommend finding "an excellent" editor? And, is it necessary to have a manuscript prior to that or is the idea and concept of a story enough to take to an editor? Michael

Michael Finkel You can hire an editor yourself -- there are many freelance editors, just do a web search. I'd say to find a good one, have the prospective editor read a page or two of your work, and see what suggestions he or she may have -- if they make you think, "Wow -- this editor is right; these suggestions make my work better, and I wouldn't have thought of them myself," then you've found a great editor!
