asked:
How close is this to the first Shetland series? I watched it, stopped when I realized it was a book series, and now I'm reading through them. I don't want to read the book if it was close to the series.

So far, I have enjoyed both the books and the TV series. The story lines are a little different, but that made it more enjoyable for me since I didn’t feel that I was watching something that I had already read. Otherwise the scenery and the characters, although somewhat different, are true to the spirit of the novels.

The TV series started at the 3rd novel, I think. In the book Cassie, who wasn't even his step daughter then, was only about 5. I don't think it's very close to the TV series, but with the books, you get a lot of background info.
I'm reading the Shetland series in order, then I will read the Vera series in order (by the same author)

I've seen the television series and really enjoyed it. I think the show captures the tone of the books, if not all the details. And I think Douglas Henshaw is wonderful as DI Perez... he matches up with in attitude... laid back, calm, thoughtful... I have no complaints at all. I like both the TV show and the books just as they are...
