Connie asked Tracy Chevalier:

This is more comment than question: I just started reading New Boy (Advance Reader's Edition). I'm very intrigued by the revisioning of Shakespeare, and anticipate I'll have an eye-peeled for femininist, new historicist, and maybe some deconstructionist elements. Am I anticipating too much?

Tracy Chevalier Ha ha! Possibly a little too much. If I wrote a book consciously thinking about all that stuff, it would be terrible - bad storytelling, too self-conscious. Having said that, I always felt Desdemona and Emilia were woefully underwritten parts so I have tried to give them almost equal billing with the boys.

At college when studying Othello we had to read an article that was a Freudian interpretation of the strawberry-embroidered handkerchief. (In New Boy it's a strawberry-embossed pencil case.) It was, as you can imagine, ludicrous. Shakey must have had a laugh from his grave!
