During the Chinese civil war, my grandparents retreated to Taiwan with the Kuomingdang. Everybody thought it was just a temporary retreat, so they left their 2 and 5 year old daughters (my aunts) in China. Long story short, it was 40 years before my grandparents could return, and they never found their daughters. Knowing how that time period went down, they're probably dead, but who knows. The mystery would make a good novel, but I don't think I could write it. Being a mother myself, it's too painful to think about my grandparents going through that.
