People are citing lesbian sex as the reason it is not appropriate for 6th-grade students but there are multiple scenes of sexual assault/intended sexual assault where a lot of manipulation and gaslighting happens. In my opinion, the swearing and teen pregnancy are not reasons to prevent 6th graders from reading this; in all likelihood, they already know all the curses in this book and understand that teen pregnancy happens. So I guess it depends on whether you consider sexual assault an off-limits topic for 6th graders.

LOVE this book, but actually, there is a sex scene near the end. It's not graphic at all and easy to miss, especially if you're not a lesbian. Lesbian sex is often misinterpreted when based on heterosexual definitions of sex.

I teach 7th graders, and honestly, I think it's a bit too edgy for 7th grade. There is a teen pregnancy, abortion, lesbian sex and quite a bit of foul language.
It's better suited for high schoolers.
Having said that, it is a great book with which I'm sure many kids would definitely relate.

Depends on how mature the 6th graders are.

How old is Pen? My copy says she's 12, and that doesn't add up.

I think so. There's one scene that borders on sexual assault and is very unsettling and there's also consensual making out but nothing that an 11 year couldn't handle.
