During my basic training at boot camp, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, during the mid-1960's, throughout the twelve-week period, occasionally we recruits would awake and discover that one of the racks (bunk beds) was empty. The sheets, blankets and former occupant had disappeared during the night.
In Reality, the missing recruit was a "washout" who had been removed because, for some reason, they were determined to have been unfit for further training. However, it would be interesting to create a mystery novel about a more nefarious plot for these sudden disappearances.
