I found a head in a carrier bag as a child. Ever since then I've been wary of opening a white plastic carrier bag left by a path, even if the outside is unstained. Some images stay with you.

Yes indeed, I adore Damnation Alley, for all it's flaws and how dated it is and everything else you could argue against it. It gets five stars only because I can't give it ten on this platform. Also on the 'Brilliant bookshelf' was I Am Legend which I think is hugely under rated.
