Allison asked Kathryn Hast:

Hello, Ms. Hast. I'm contacting the authors of books that I've recently read with my daughter Layla, to help her engage with the idea that books come from imagination. Our question to you is: How do you come up with an idea for a children's book? Thank you!

Kathryn Hast Hi Allison,

Great question! I wish I had a simple answer for you and Layla. I have to admit: Otis Grows actually began as a dream my dad had. And Batty Betty, my next book, began with a scribble drawing my (then) three-year-old did, which was captioned, "A giant dancing with a basket."

So perhaps it's a matter of paying attention to the world around you? Inspiration is everywhere! Maybe you and Layla can write your own book...!

Best,
Kathryn
