By age 16 some of the teenage characters are sexually active. There are descriptions of sex, sexually transmitted diseases, female circumcision and gynecological fistulas. Many references to "bar maids" (ie sex workers) who support themselves and their children in this way as a matter of course. As for violence, there is a hanging, allusions to torture, military coupes and the female circumcision mentioned above. It is a sweeping novel that covers a 50+ year period. I would recommend you read it first and try to have ongoing discussions about the book with your teen if s/he wants to read it. (less)
