I would start with The Long Loneliness. Let Dorothy Day tell you herself who she is first, you know? And it's a marvel of a book. The kind of book that took my breath away.

You will definitely learn a lot about Dorothy Day, maybe more than you want to know, from this book. I haven't read "The Long Loneliness," but I think I would read it first.
Kathie
I concur with the opinion of the others. I haven't read "The Long Loneliness", but I found this book focused too much on her daughter and not so much on Dorothy herself and her work.

I recommend The Reckless Way of Love: notes on Following Jesus. Get a feel for her vision of the world. 120 pages.
