What are the notes that say Leech, op Cit. mean? Are these different characters saying different things? do they take quotes out of other books? Also how do you know who is speaking ?

Marian Those are ostensibly quotes from books written about Lincoln. Op Cit means already cited before. Some of the quotes from books are made up by the author and others are from real books. I know Saunders puts a couple of quotes in from Doris Kearns Goodwin who wrote Team of Rivals.
Ellen Janerico I looked up some of these references in the LOC catalog and found quite a few. I think some that I did not find are from unpublished memoirs and letters. Some may be the author's inventions. I was impressed with the research. He uses quotes from many different sources (or voices) to tell Willie's and Lincoln's parts of the story. Finding and selecting them must have been a challenge.
