Can I read this book by itself (stand-alone) or do I need to read the previous 4?

Sasha I read it without knowing it was part of a series (let alone that it was the fifth part). I hate that it wasn't specified enough in the version I bought. While I understood most that was going on, it's probably advisable to read the previous installments.
Wdmoor Why cheat yourself? Go straight to The Atrocity Archives and enjoy the whole series...you lucky dog.
5 Track I read a few of them out of order & wish I hadn't... Not so much spoilers (a little bit tho) as just confusing. The wikipedia page for Laundry Files is pretty good about not giving too much away & tells you what order they were writ in, since the books themselves largely do not.
Persephone Singh Stross does periodically re-cap threads, so you wont be totally lost reading this by itself.
However, you'd be cheating yourself.
Laura You'll get more of the jokes if you read the other ones, and Stross doesn't reestablish the relationships he's already established, but if you can take on faith that yes, these people are married and really love each other and yes, these people work together and have complicated relationships, I think it can stand alone.
