Goodreads asked Peter Rendell:

How do you get inspired to write?

Peter Rendell Many ideas start from dreams. I have tried to master the art of lucid dreaming. As soon as I wake after a dream, I spend the next hour trying to brain dump every thought and emotion. These special dreams only happen a few times a year.
For the rest of the year, I fall back onto a standard technique. Each night, I meditate on a thought that I would like to dream about. Most nights I wake up and nothing has happened. Sometimes during the day, a new idea occurs. My subconscious has been working on the idea.
Inspiration comes from 99% perspiration. You must keep breaking down every aspect of the idea.
The inspiration to write comes from an explosion of ideas and a desire to record the thoughts before the conscious mind starts to edit them.
