Walker asked:

Is there a typo on page 349 of my (hardback) copy? Shortly after they sent word that there would be a second trial, the news has "Photograph of Luther Amos Dunphy. Photograph of Augustus Dunphy, MD. Side by side like estranged brothers..." Is this intentional? As in the news photographs were making some kind of point?

Judith Mine too. It's definitely a mistake. I think of a typo as a misspelling or a juxtaposed letter but this is a mistake. (Augustus Dunphy!?!?) And I too noticed that the little hairbrush the kind teacher gave to Dawn went from pink to blue. I felt like I was watching the scene in "Sleeping Beauty" where the fairies are changing her dress color.
Francesca Pashby Also, the hairbrush the kind teacher gave Dawn went from pink to blue! Can I get a job as an editor please?!!
Kathy I stumbled on that as well. I doubt it was intentional.
Fiona H This is a typo, otherwise why not also write "Photograph of Luther Voorhees"? Lots of misplaced or missing commas.
There is also an error on the back of the (paperback) book: "When the daughters of the two families, Naomi Voorhees and Dawn Dunphy, glimpse each other at the trial of Luther Dunphy …" Jenna did not let Naomi and Darren attend either of the trials. Naomi and Dawn never met each other until Naomi starts tracking people down and visiting the places where her father had been and she learns Dawn is a boxer. The two don't meet until quite late in the book. They were aware of each other's existence at the time of the trials and but did not meet until years later.
Joseph Pfeffer It seemed intentional to me. Why else what Oates have written "Side by side like estranged brothers?" I thought she was making a point about how the press didn't really care about the trial and the issues behind it, and some editor thought it would be more sensational if the two wre actual brothers. If you're worried about typos, late in the book "Dayton" comes off as "Dayson." Jarring.
Brian Swain I'm only up to pg. 125 and I've already found numerous typos. Not the greatest copy editing.
Carol Panasci And later in the book they reference "Noami."
Anne Enste I noticed this, too. I'm pretty sure it was an editing mistake.
㋛ ㋡ It was like this in the ebook, too. Very jarring but I'm not sure it was intentional.
