Goodreads asked Carol Mason:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Carol Mason Know what type of book you are writing and read widely in that genre so you know where the bar is set. That said, your book is yours, make it your own, don't try to follow trends, don't write something you think will sell - write what you are passionate about. Ask yourself are you writing the book that would keep you sat there, glued to it, turning pages, if you were the reader? Once it's written, learn all you can about the publishing industry. Be professional in your communication with agents - remember writing is a business as well as a passion. Sell yourself in a credible, professional, sensible manner and you will be giving your novel the best chance you can.
