I had the same question. This part happened in chapter 3.4 when Ferguson is angry with his father. I now think that it's what Ferguson would have done if his father has lived as an old man... or at least, it is how Ferguson feels at the time. What he thinks. But not what will happen.

I wondered the same thing. He said he gave the money to fellow street people.

I don't think it would be an error. Rather, another possible outcome, an accidency. Maybe with the intention of the unreliable narrator to puzzle the reader.
