Bill asked David Wong:

There's a line you wrote in the original JDATE that pops into my head every now and then, and I still don't know the answer to the question it poses - when I dream of a man about to set off T&T, and I awake to a lightning strike, how did my brain know to do that?

David Wong I don't know and have never looked up a plausible theory, other than that we're remembering it wrong or something? I mean in some of the cases I can remember it happening to me, it was incorporating the sound of my alarm and the dream led up to it, and maybe you could say my brain new that the alarm was coming at exactly 6:30 and is able to keep super accurate time while I'm asleep? But it was the thunder example (similar to a dream I actually had) that got me thinking and led me to include it in the book.
