Some of the characters run through his books, so it helps to read the first one, but you do not lose any of the story about this case by reading it in isolation.
I really enjoy his books, and read quite a few a few years ago. I have just started from book 1 again, so recap and get the full story. Just finished this one and an enjoyable read. I don't have a brilliant memory, so had forgotten the plot and really enjoyed it the 2nd time round.

Anything you might REALLY need to know about Roy Grace from the first book is recapped here in the second. The first book was pretty good, though. The interview at the end of the second book sort of implies you definitely want to know the story of the second book before you get to the third, though.
