No, this is not a children's story. If you've watched Hayao Miyazaki's films, it's more on the level of Princess Mononoke than it is the Nausicaa movie, except even more graphically violent. A major theme of this work is the horror of war and Miyazaki pulls no punches when it comes to depicting death, whether it be soldiers in battle or massacred towns of civilians. I think maybe 11 or 12 would be a more appropriate starting age for this series.
