Cassie asked Laurie Halse Anderson:

How do you pick or choose your issues to write about in your books? P.S. I loved your book Wintergirls. Was it hard writing such a hard and gritty topic?

Laurie Halse Anderson So far the topics have chosen me. I'll get an idea or find myself drawn to a challenge, like eating disorders or having an alcoholic parent, then I think about it for months (sometimes years) until I start to hear the character's voice in my head.

Then I start writing.

WINTERGIRLS was extremely painful to write. I had to be vigilant about practicing good self-care so I didn't fall back into unhealthy eating habits.
