I appreciate the history/plotting but most of all the eloquent characterization ... A LESSON IN SECRETS was astonishingly timely, given the rise of fascism now. Are you already thinking about your NEXT episode?

I'm a huge Maisie Hobbs fan—I have so much respect for you as the author! When I talk about the books to others, I tell them what attracts me most; what I consider the "spiritual nature" of the books. I mean the way Maisie's cases always have an aspect that teaches her about her own life and how she needs to grow. I never see this mentioned in other reviews. I wonder if you would identify the quality that way, or not?

I love the Maisie Dobbs books: I have read all and keep them to reread. One thing I wonder, though: what value do long descriptions of Maisie's (etc.) outfits add? Sometimes these bog down the story's progress. Significant sensory details are indeed important to atmosphere--they help bring a story alive--but I wonder if there is a way to intersperse sartorial specifics instead of presenting them in "chunks."
