Gail Buckley
Gail Buckley asked Jacqueline Winspear:

What is your process for writing a book? How long do you do the research? Do you have a certain story or plot in mind first then make the characters work around it? Or do you let your characters drive the plot?

Jacqueline Winspear Characters always drive the plot - my books are very much "character driven." I start with a template of a story - when I start I know the beginning, middle and end, and I know the arc of the story - then I start to write, allowing time to "dance with the moment" when characters (for example) do something I wasn't expecting - you have to go with those opportunities. I am not very prescriptive when I begin to write - I like to be surprised too.
