I received the first Maisie Dobbs book as a gift and was hooked. I have read all of your books and I want to thank you for so many hours of reading enjoyment. My question is, is there a little bit of your personality in Maisie? She is such a strong woman.
Jacqueline Winspear
I don't think there's much of me, if anything, in Maisie Dobbs. I am quite a strong person - but not like Maisie. She is of my imagination, and based upon the women of her generation in Britain, who were very strong - with the onset of war in the years 1914 onwards, they were the first generation of women to go to war in significant numbers - about 900,000 alone went into munitions, and that is without the code-breakers, intelligence agents, nurses, ambulance drivers etc - and the women who moved into men's jobs on the home front.

This is your most powerful writing. The way you look at life will be forever etched in my mind. [Not enough space allowed for the entire quote.] "For her part, Maisie knew that each day had to be taken as it came, and to do her work she must be flexible, to move the fabric of time as one might if sewing a difficult seam she had to break down time itself.... was this based from personal observation or experiences?

I want to thank for Maisie Dobbs, as well. I enjoy reading mysteries series, so what you do fits me very well. However, while many series are extremely formulaic, yours are not. The writing is more literary than a normal mystery series. I always learn so much about the time period and the people when I read one of your books. And, your characters are so human, well-rounded, and real. How do you do this?
