Goodreads asked Matthew Williams:

How do you get inspired to write?

Matthew Williams My Inspiration to write actually came from my career as an engineering manager. At school there were few people less likely than myself to actually publish a novel, let alone more! I struggled with English right up until my final year when a brilliant teacher called Mrs Hughes pointed out that I was dyslexic.
Wow! It made such a difference just knowing why I had been struggling so much. I started reading more, it helped to beat my demons and also helped me to pass English and gain distinctions in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
It was 1999 when I was up for a promotion that my dyslexia demons came back, OH NO! I'd have to use written communication and it was terrifying. I decided to write a story to help beat them again, and it worked well enough.
It was many years later when I found the story that I had written and read it back. I was shocked at how well it compared to many of the books that I had read. So I turned this short story into a 100,000 word novel and published 'The Shady Corner' after that I was just in love with writing. :-)
