Sherrie asked Jim C. Hines:

I am really enjoying your Magic Wielding Librarian and also showed another person your book and he is now requesting it and so I am hoping to find another copy of your very first book. I have bought all the books in this series and still reading them. I was just wondering how you came up with this idea? It is really fascinating the books you use and what is taken out of them. I hope this will go on a little longer

Jim C. Hines Hi Sherri!

It's an editor's fault. She asked me to write a short story about Smudge the fire-spider from my goblin books, but she wanted a story set in the present day. So I needed to invent a magic that would let someone pull Smudge out of a book into our world. That short story was called "Mightier than the Sword," and was sort of the prototype for Isaac and libriomancy and everything that followed later with the books.

I'm so glad you're enjoying them! Sadly, I think the four books are it for the time being. But I did do a short story tie-in called "Chupacabra's Song," and I'm hoping to eventually do a novella or novelette set after the events of Revisionary.

Best,
Jim
