Where did Scott get the fountain pen that his father gave him from? He lost everything in the crash and swam ashore with no pants even, and he never went back home to retrieve any of his belongings. So, while the paragraph where he gifts this pen to the 4 yr old is so touching, I was confused as to how he even had the pen.

I know this is from 3 years ago, but this is such a good catch. It didn't occur to me where he got it from, I just thought it was unbelievably stupid that he would gift it to a 4 year old, who would most likely immediately lose it and wouldn't be old enough to understand its significance anyway.

That is a great question - it got by me! And it was a pencil that he dropped on the plane.

When he was sketching right before the crash he dropped the pen and unbuckled his seatbelt to retrieve it. That action saved his life.

Great question!!! I have no answer, just surprised I didn't notice (and that it hasn't been asked/answered yet). This book was full of little errors!
