Kendra I want to read all of them, but I Am Number 4 has been a dust collector :/

Sarah I may still change my vote. My nomination Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is a great discussion piece but I really want to read The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker . But I would read The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and In the Woods (Dublin Murder Squad, #1) by Tana French and The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay

message 3: by Marielle (new)

Marielle Love to read Gaiman

message 4: by Sarah (last edited Sep 18, 2013 01:25PM) (new)

Sarah I loved the movie The Great Gatsby - my favorite movie this year. It really brought the story to life and DiCaprio is mind blowing - once again. He was beyond phenomenal last year in Jango Unchained - his best work to date.
...But I hated the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald . One case where the movie is sooooo much better - in my opinion.

message 5: by Cathie (new)

Cathie The book (Great Gatsby) is a classic written in it's time frame; the movie is a product of current culture. It was beautiful and all updated and had great visuals but I really loved the book with all it's layers of deceit and lies.

There are a lot of great choices for nomination this time around; it's really nice to see more people getting involved :-)

The first movie was much more authentic than the 2nd movie. I've not read the book, but my daughter read it and thought it was a stunner!

message 7: by Bill (new)

Bill Paugh I am currently reading The Golem and The Jinni. I am about a third of the way into the book and it is excellent. I voted for the Graveyard Book, as I have heard so much about it.

message 8: by Vanezabalbo (new)

Vanezabalbo i think we should read Great Gatsby because it will bring a interesting discussion xD

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah The one I loved from high school required reading was The Count of Monte Cristo. Loved it.

Bill - I keep hearing great things from people who have read The Golem and the Jinni.

I assure you, Never Let Me Go is a book that will cry for discussion. OMG it has been haunting me. It is just so disquieting. It is still haunting me. I think it was better than Brave New World - so disturbing.

I really want to read The Sea of Tranquility, especially after Cathie's review quite recently.

message 12: by Hadi (new)

Hadi Hami I will love to read, Never Let Me Go.

message 13: by Crystal (new)

Crystal The Great Gatsby is on my to read list, but I didn't vote for it since it was a buddy read in April, and I didn't think that would be fair to those who had already read it for that read in this group. I want to read The Golem and the Jinni and The Graveyard Book the most, but they both have a wait at my library, and I'm afraid I wouldn't get them in time, so I voted for my third choice which I already had downloaded :) There were only 3 of them that weren't offered by my library :)

message 14: by Nae (new)

Nae Ayson I want to read EVERYTHING. This poll is awesome!

message 15: by Sheila (new)

Sheila It's amazing how many people really don't like The Great Gatsby, so it would make for a good discussion. I loved it mostly for the writing style and the mystery behind Gatsby. I might have to vote for The Winter Sea though. I love fiction that gets into history and it sounds really interesting with a relative remembering things about her ancestor.

message 16: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Scales In the results... what's it mean when there is a star by the title?

message 17: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Angell Already read Great Gatsby and I am number 4. For me, neither is worth re-reading. Alas.

message 18: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Scales A discussion on In the Woods would be interesting because from the reviews some have been frustrated about one of the books mysteries not being solved .. Other reviewers rated in 5 stars and say its the best book. I'm curious to see if the mystery is actually solved but just in a cryptic way that is not obvious.. maybe its subtly in the text but not obvious. I'd like to read everyones interpretations. In the Woods (Dublin Murder Squad, #1) by Tana French

message 19: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Maybe the other mystery is solved in one of the following books. It looked to me like there were at least two that followed it when I looked it up.

Leslie Scales Crystal wrote: "Maybe the other mystery is solved in one of the following books. It looked to me like there were at least two that followed it when I looked it up."

one would think. According to the frustrated parties.. the man the one mystery (multiple mysteries in this book) is regarding is not in the other books.. the protagonist in the next book is his partner and he's no longer around. From what i gather so far.. each book in the series is written from someone else's point of view..

The star marks the book that you voted for.

ah, so that is a series that can be read out of order probably. I have been wondering if The Dark Tower can be read out of order because my library doesn't have the gun slinger in eBook or audiobook for download. I may have to make the time to really go in there on Tuesday lol

message 23: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Scales I'm reading the dark tower series in order but you can probably really start anywhere in the series because Stephen King recaps ask the previous books at the beginning of each.

That's a series that should be read in order. It is really one long story. You may get confused if you read them out of order.

message 26: by Anima (new)

Anima Miejska It slipped my mind earlier, but came to my attention, that we already read the Great Gatsby as a buddy read some time ago, so is it possible to have this book on the poll for the BOTM?

message 27: by Karen (new)

Karen I've already read The Great Gatsby, so chose Never Let Me Go instead.

Crystal Anima wrote: "It slipped my mind earlier, but came to my attention, that we already read the Great Gatsby as a buddy read some time ago, so is it possible to have this book on the poll for the BOTM?"

I had mentioned that previously, that's the reason I didn't vote for it. Seemed unfair to me for those that participated in the buddy read. I wasn't a part of this group then...

Lynn Mod
Anima wrote: "It slipped my mind earlier, but came to my attention, that we already read the Great Gatsby as a buddy read some time ago, so is it possible to have this book on the poll for the BOTM?"

I made the decision to include it because while it was read for a buddy read, it was only when we first started doing them (in fact I think it was the first one) and there was only a small participation in that buddy read.

message 30: by Anima (new)

Anima Miejska I was only thinking that perhaps if we already have such thread, those who want to discuss this book still may do it, while we can have another read in November, but of course, I'm fine with that decision, I re-read the Great Gatsby in March, so I can join the discussion in any form.

message 31: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I am so glad The Great Gatsby is winning because if it was one I really wanted I don't know how I could possibly squeeze it in. I still need to catch up with The Passage and The Dark Tower series. Plus everything else. I can't seem to catch up at this point:(

message 32: by David (new)

David Hogan I've been a fan of Tana French ever since I read The Likeness. She's a talented mystery writer with a real knack for character. 'In the Woods' would be by choice since it's the one book of hers I haven't read.

I am reading the Likeness now.. I have heard good things. In the Woods is amazing especially if you like Tana French's writing. The story just sucks you in. So good.

The first few pages of In the Woods didnt catch me but I kept at it and then i couldn't put it down.. it turned out to be such a good book.

I'm interested to hear what you think about it when you finish.

Bonnie Kernene I have read The Great Gatsby, but it has been like 20 years ago. I loved it! But I chose Into The Woods, but will reread The Great Gatsby if it is chosen!

message 38: by Cathie (new)

Cathie I would strongly recommend Sea of Tranquility as an excellent read even if we don't end of reading it as this month's selection.

And remember you can always re-nominate books another month if they don't win in the current poll. Just ask Sarah! She was so persistent after about 4 months her book finally took the majority's interest.

Anima, Buddy reads aren't our Group's official reads so I don't see any reason not to include any book that has been a buddy read. A lot of people don't do the buddy reads and some prefer to stick with a group's main selections (in our case, The monthly read, the series read and the Nominated book reads.)I believe most other groups have the same policy with buddy reads; if someone wants a book and it fits the criteria for the month's nomination then it is open to be voted on.

It is a good possibility when the winners are announced from this year's Reader's Choice Awards that our main selections next year will be repeats of some of the casual buddy reads.

Anima - or you can just do all our other reads with me:) Except I am way behind. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak movie comes out in November - Yeah. But that may only be for the U.S.?

message 40: by Anima (new)

Anima Miejska Cathie, thanks for explanation, perhaps there could a clear statement on that matter in the first post in the nomination thread, just in case anyone gets confussed (like me LOL).

Sarah, thanks for the offer :), I'm thinking about putting a buddy read request on In the Woods as it seems that some people were interested in this book and I'm really eager to read it. I have to check it with my schedule :)
