My home library has 42 shelves each about four feet long. So allowing for an inch and a quarter per book, I'd estimate 2520 books and steadily growing.

At least 100 books on my bookshelves, not counting the hundreds of books my children have... and over 400 on my kindle. And both growing steadily. :)
About 600-700 rough estimate if I counted all my paperbacks, hardcover, graphic novels, and electronic books. Hubby says I have too many books....I don't see it.

Nobody can ever have too many books ;)

I agree. On my last attempt at counting I had about 300 physical books and ran out of shelf space.

I have about 250 and I only have one single shelf and I have the impression that it could explode very soon ;)

Lol I understand that I have a tower of books in between two bookshelves that are begging for a proper spot.
Let's see, counting fiction, non-fiction, school books, my old children's books, puzzle/activity books...
Personal library, in an old mansion. I can see it. Would love to have it. Maybe someone is actually that lucky.
Way more than a 1000. I haven't counted them since high school so...I think about four years ago I was around 1500, but I think it's WAY over that now. :)

Because it's the most beautiful way to decorate a house ;)
I agree unless you are allergic to dust. When I worked in the library my doctor told me to quit as the books were making me sick he said! I still love owning books.
Still I own some very old books.

I used to have many more, but now I have a kindle so most of my books are electronic, I guess that doesn't really count on this poll. I just keep the ones that I adore, or are beautiful to look at now. Space is a premium in our little house :)
I have about 130.. and I'm glad to say that I have read all but 4 or 5:)
I have around 50 at the moment (not counting the 70 on my kindle lol), but the itch to buy physical copies of books is increasing, even though my parents are growing increasingly angry at the shelf space my collection is monopolizing. Somebody hold me back.

I can't imagine your parents being angry about you buying books!

My mom hates having a cluttered house, so she tries to pack them away into boxes sometimes until I beg her to leave all the pretty books where I can admire them. Hehehe :p
If we count kindle books, too many to count! I know around how many physical books I own but I have so many kindle books.

bwhahahaha

I wouldn't mind doing that for a few months. The only tv I'd watch would be the news, just to make sure no disasters or celebrity deaths were going on that I needed to know about. My to read pile would shrink almost as fast as it currently grows, and I wouldn't have a number around 95%, of books that I own but haven't read.

i think their being either sarcastic or they're not telling the truth.

"If you mean that anyone would be telling a lie about owning more than a 1000 books, I can assure that I am writing the truth. There is also no sarcasm nor even a boast in admitting to such a large collection, only a bit of chagrin. But then I have been collecting books for over 40 years, which is probably longer than most here have been alive... Many family and friends know how much I love books and have given them as gifts. Also there are those I've picked up used (very cheap). However, that said, I'm in the process of giving away and selling my collection.

I don't doubt they're telling the truth, I certainly am and I'm sure Bettie is too, I'm just surprised so many people have enough room for 1000+ books. What with the trend in housing leaning towards compact, high rise living, most people I know don't have room in their house/apartment for 1000+ books, unless they're piled in every room with no thought to shelving. I would have thought the most common answer would have been around the 300-400 mark.
I'm trying to read and release all the physical books that won't be special enough to reread, so I'm well under the "over 1K" that I used to have. But there are still books to save for grandkids, to reread, favorite reference works.... I rent, and I'm getting older, and I know my heirs aren't interested in weeding through them, so they need to go out of the house....But then there's the library, with 'shiny' distracting books!
