message 1: by f (new)

f Would anyone like to say what they nominated or voted for, and why?

message 2: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I nominated two - both I've discussed with others who didn't nominate anything so I felt ok with it.

I put up Renegade by Cheyne Curry because I love the online story - except for the time travel explanation that was left out of the published version - and need an excuse to read the published one.

I also put up Desolation Point because I will read it in April and it seemed like a good one to put up. I heard it was good but I want to see for myself!

message 3: by f (new)

f I liked Desolation Point but then I'm not entirely unbiased *g*

I nominated Trumpet, by the Scottish poet Jackie Kay. It's a novel about a well-known musician who after his death is discovered by the undertaker to be physically female. The story's mostly told by his widow and son, and it's an interesting examination of gender roles and people's reactions to transgression. Oh, and the audiobook is narrated in a lovely Scottish accent not unlike Verity's. Just saying :-)

I just happen to have a couple of Audible credits... Hmmm...

message 5: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I'm interested in The Furthest Light but I don't know any of the people who have reviewed it. And at least one of the high rankings is a new Bella author.

message 6: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I had to go with Trumpet. Even if it's not picked, I'm gonna pick up the audio book.

message 7: by Cheri (new)

Cheri It wasn't available at the library but it was on sale at Audible for $10.

message 8: by f (new)

f My library had it. Just about the only lgbti book it did have!

message 9: by Baxter Clare (new)

Baxter Clare Trautman I nominated The Furthest City Light because it was a very well-written story about a criminal defense attorney who has almost killed herself following her career path, and her ensuing struggle to find a physical, spiritual and emotional balance on a new path. I don't usually read law stories (because I can't follow them!) but Winer, who was a DA, gives exactly the amount of info necessary and not a smidgen more, plus what could have been a very heavy story is lightened with a good deal of droll humor. Plus, her character is a lesbian but that is beautifully incorporated into and not the over-riding story line.

message 10: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Thanks Baxter. I'll put it on my TBR list if it's not picked.

message 11: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Just for the record, more than one person nominated that one which is why I went looking for reviews by people I know. I don't think we've had a book be nominated by two people in the same month.

message 12: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Well I nominated Holiday Escort because I really liked it and the author is a very sweet woman.

message 13: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Trumpet just sounds SO GOOD. Although I am still gonna read Desolation Point in April no matter what for a buddy read if it doesn't win.

message 14: by Cheri (new)

Cheri The Boys from Birmingham looks really good, too. This is another month with several selections I'd like to vote for. I see some more buddy reads happening!

message 15: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Yeah it'll be buddy read-tacular!

I want to read Boys from Birmingham also.

Would also read The Furthest City Light...

Well, geez, I wanna read a lot of them

message 16: by SpritetheRight (new)

SpritetheRight Just tell me what we are reading. I have no opinion. Okay just one nothing dealing with cancer.

message 17: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Everyone get that? No cancer related books this month, please.

Ferox - is there any cancer in Trumpet?

message 18: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne So hard to choose, but I am going with "The Furthest City Light". It is available on Nook and I have a gift card.

message 19: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Yeah good call. As admins we are vetoing anything with cancer for Michelle's sanity sake

message 20: by Pat (new)

Pat Bane When does DP actually become available.

message 21: by Cheri (new)

Cheri April 1st, I believe.

message 22: by Pat (new)

Pat Bane If you get e-book. I think the book comes out on the 12th. Maybe we should read in May.
Holiday Escort was fun but light, a buddy read.
I picked Worth Every Step because a lot of us are gearing up to work on our fitness level.
Trumpet sounds very interesting.

message 23: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I think I bought Worth Every Step but can't remember if I read it or, if I did, if it was any different from the online version (called something like The Road to Mt. Kilimanjaro)

message 24: by Pat (new)

Pat Bane I never read the fanfic. So I really don't know.

message 25: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne I could do Worth Every Step. It is on the bookshelf, but I have not read it.

message 26: by Cheri (new)

Cheri If Trumpet has no cancer, I'm sticking with that one! I think.

message 27: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Pat have you read any of Julia's other books?

message 28: by f (new)

f Cheri wrote: "If Trumpet has no cancer, I'm sticking with that one! I think."

No cancer. I can't actually remember what the trumpeter dies of but it's not relevant - the real cause is that he won't go to a doctor because he has too much to hide.

I can't decide what to vote for. I liked Desolation Point but can't really discuss it, in all fairness. Of the rest, Theft sounds the most intriguing, but I've never heard of it.

message 29: by Pat (new)

Pat Bane Jenny Pat have you read any of Julia's other books?
No Kitty talked about these books and at the time this one struct my fancy. Do you like her other books and are they all short?

message 30: by Jenny (new)

Jenny No their not all short and I really liked Bidding War and Rewind. Thise were my two favorites.

message 31: by Pat (new)

Pat Bane I'll try them.

message 32: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Bidding War is fun like Holiday Escort and Rewind is more emotional. It was for me anyway.

message 33: by Sunny (new)

Sunny Ack, somehow I missed this post yesterday. I nominated Theft. I was perusing this year's Lambda Literary Award finalists and it was on the list. It sounded intriguing, but I don't know anyone who's actually read it.

message 34: by f (new)

f Pat wrote: "If you get e-book. I think the book comes out on the 12th. Maybe we should read in May."

Yeah, it would make sense to pick books the month after they become available. Some of us old stick-in-the-muds are still reading paper versions :-)

message 35: by Alena (new)

Alena It's also an unofficial rule which noone seems to remember. *sigh*

message 36: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Sorry - I put that one up because I thought the paperback was coming out on the 1st and the ebook was already out.

message 37: by Cari (new)

Cari Hunter Hell, I don't even know when Desolation Point's properly out and I bloody wrote it!

As far as I know officially, the e-book will be available via Bold Strokes only on April 1st. The paperback (as per the BSB site) now also says April 1st for publication (it was mid-April, seems to have jumped the gun slightly.) Amazon have also jumped t'gun on the paperback and say they have it in stock. They won't get their mitts on the e-book till about May, June.

Clear as mud?

I voted for Trumpet cos Ferox said she'd like to chat about it *g*

message 38: by Nikki (new)

Nikki You're so whipped ;)

message 39: by SpritetheRight (new)

SpritetheRight I still can't choose.

message 40: by Cari (new)

Cari Hunter Nikki wrote: "You're so whipped ;)"

LOL, you're so right ;-p

message 41: by Alena (new)

Alena Cari, forget about the trumpet. Pick the mountain book, I mean not yours, the other one!

Although I wonder how crazy Cari will go if we pick DP and she can't attend :-)

message 42: by Cari (new)

Cari Hunter Heh, thanks, but I'll stick with Trumpet, I only have room in my life for one mountain book ;-)

I think folks will have problems getting hold of DP in time, even if it was picked, and I wouldn't dream of earwigging on its hangout, so it wouldn't bother me!

message 43: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean Jenny wrote: "Bidding War is fun like Holiday Escort and Rewind is more emotional. It was for me anyway."

Me too, Jenny.

Loved Holiday Escort, but I'm not sure there's enough substance in it to have an involved discussion.

message 44: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean Also, I am embarrassed to say I almost missed voting on this poll because I am used to a 2nd message saying the poll opened. Then I realized Cheri put that info in the same one asking for nominations. I'm like a kid needing my hand held, sometimes.

Love the variety of books people nominated, even if it makes my to-be-read list longer and longer...

message 45: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I'll shoot a message letting everyone know that today is the last day for voting.

I've been sticking to the same schedule for the past couple of months and plan to keep it going.

Post the call for nominations on the 15th, collect them through the 17th, post the poll on the 18th and run it through the 22nd.

message 46: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean Very organized!

message 47: by Cheri (new)

Cheri It's the only way I'll remember every month. I put it on my calendar!

message 48: by Alena (new)

Alena 22nd is great to remember, it's on cake day.

message 49: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Woot! Two books this month! I can be excited because I've already read Worth Every Step at least twice so I'll be able to listen to it with text-to-speech.

Great suggestions this month. I see a few buddy reads being set up. Remember, everyone can set up a buddy read thread. If you have any questions, just ask!

message 50: by Sunny (new)

Sunny Aw, too late. I was just coming to change my vote to make it a 3-way! You can blame Ferox for putting that idea in my head.
