message 1: by Hilary (new)

Hilary Yes, but only when *I* have read them, usually to said child.

message 2: by Bea (new)

Bea I'm not a parent but I teach pre-school. I shelve the kids books that I actually own myself.

message 3: by Tedders (new)

Tedders I'm not a parent, but I'll sometimes add books I read my little sister.

message 4: by cEe beE (new)

cEe beE I shelve children's books that I've read. My kid has nothing to do with it. LOL!

message 5: by Melinda (new)

Melinda I'm not a parent...lol, but I shelve books I read when I was younger. :D

message 6: by Steph (new)

Steph Sinclair Yup, and I rate and review it based on how my kids enjoyed it. :)

message 7: by Lynda (new)

Lynda Well, I sort of do this anyway. Storybooks I enjoy reading I don't mind shelving here at all. Most of the cutesy crap I read them (they're three and four)... no.

And when they get to be of the age that they're reading books on their own, they can start their own social networking bookshelves, I suppose. Definitely not gonna shelve books I haven't read.

message 8: by Annie (new)

Annie seems like goodreads users don't like children...so many without kids (me too)

message 9: by Ronyell (new)

Ronyell Yep! Since I love reading children's books, I always love using Goodreads for this!

message 10: by Annie (new)

Annie Loretta wrote: "thefamilycat wrote: "seems like goodreads users don't like children...so many without kids (me too)"

They just set their priorities - more time to read without kids!"

word!

message 11: by Kathie (katmom) (new)

Kathie (katmom) I agree with some of the earlier commenters, only when I've read them too. Otherwise, they can shelve their own! Mine actually like to see their books on shelves.

message 12: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Panther sometimes shelve ones I have read.

message 13: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. Some of the best books ever written are for kids, so why not read them?

message 14: by Jen (new)

Jen Not a parent but an elementary librarian. I keep track of what I read to the classes and when--helps me when trying to figure out the last time I shared a specific book with them.

message 15: by Joseph (new)

Joseph I'm not a parent, but I am a youth services librarian so I shelve pretty much everything I read: picture books, juvenile fiction, young adult fiction, adult fiction, etc. etc. etc.

message 16: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne I do it because both my sons are on the autism spectrum and I review their books from that perspective. I always struggle to find books that engage my kids and that actually help them develop language skills so when I find books that are their favorites I review them so other parents who might have the same issues have that feedback.

message 17: by Christine (new)

Christine What cool poll.

message 18: by Christine (new)

Christine Melinda wrote: "I'm not a parent...lol, but I shelve books I read when I was younger. :D"

Me too.

message 19: by Ayn (new)

Me too."

Yeah, I clicked yes before thinking about the question.

message 20: by Bara (new)

Bara I do shelf book for children but only those I read in MY childhood. I like to have in my account any book or comic I have ever read.

message 21: by Christine (new)

You know there's a way to change your vote. On this page you just click "change your vote" right underneath the poll standings and then you can re-vote.

message 22: by willaful (new)

willaful I misread it too. I shelve "my" childrens books, but not my the books belonging to my children.

message 23: by Tara (new)

Tara Only the ones I'v eread and enjoyed myself. My kids are a good source of recommendations.

message 24: by Emi えみ (new)

Emi えみ Takami 鷹見 I'm not a parent, but I am a childrens' librarian, so I use Goodreads to keep track of the ones I've read. :)

message 25: by Carmen (new)

Carmen I'm not a parent, but I am a school librarian and have encouraged many parents to use this to record their kids' reading (with the permission of said child), since Goodreads (sadly) prohibits children under 13 to use its services. I know Goodread's restrictions are because of COPPA, but I really, really wish there were a "kids only" version of Goodreads! There is so much potential for working with students, teachers, school librarians, and parents.

Christine Carmen wrote: "I'm not a parent, but I am a school librarian and have encouraged many parents to use this to record their kids' reading (with the permission of said child), since Goodreads (sadly) prohibits child..."

That wouldn't have stopped me from getting a Goodreads account! I just get one anyway. But luckily, when my English teacher told me about this site, I had just turned thirteen a couple of days earlier. I had no idea Goodreads had a restriction on that, because my eleven year old sister is on Goodreads and so is this seven year old who I met on here. I had no idea! I just barely was legal!

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not a parent but I shelve books I read when I was a child. (At 16 you could argue that I still am! But I mean I shelve actual children's books that I read 5, 10 years ago.)

message 28: by W (new)

W I meant the same thing as Isobel b/c I'm not a parent but I read the question differently =l

message 29: by Cori (new)

Cori I shelve my classroom library!

message 30: by Heather (last edited Aug 19, 2012 08:07PM) (new)

Heather Would love to start shelving my children's books! Would you have the books placed on "READ" shelf or create a new exclusive shelf just for the children's books? I asked this becuase my boys check out and we read up between 20 to 30 books a month.

message 31: by Marilla (new)

Marilla Kennell Sadly, I have no kids, but I still love children's books, but it's more of a picture book collection than a stimulating read..

message 32: by Danielle (new)

Danielle T Not a parent, but I've started a 'For future spawnlets' shelf so I know what to get when that happens.

message 33: by Kay (new)

Kay My children are adults now. But I tend to read books I like, whomever they are aimed at. And we recommend to each other some young adult titles

message 34: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I missed responding in the poll but... As a parent having a child participate in AR and having to read a chapter book or more every night then test on it the next day. Yes, I include her books. If I'm taking an hour or more to read to her to get her 2 reads done before she can test. That's time against me reading my books. And most of the time I enjoy her books. They are cute. Plus, as a bonus when I'm out shopping for books and can't remember if she has this particular book or not or if we read it from school I can check back on here just like I do with my books. I love Goodreads for all my books!

message 35: by Vivian (new)

Vivian I am a children's librarian. I post books I've used in story times and how I've used them. I then post to my blog vivianthelibrarian.blogspot.com .

message 36: by Caz (new)

Caz My kids both have GR accounts so they shelve their own. I encourage them to write reviews, too.

message 37: by Dhuaine (new)

Dhuaine I'm not a parent, but if I were, I imagine I would encourage kids to make their own profiles.

I shelve books I read as a child for leisure, but not mandatory reading and stuff that everybody was reading, like certain fairy tales.

message 38: by Emy (new)

Emy No, but then again I also wouldn't shelve the husband's books either...

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

I am a grandparent of a 6 year old who reads to me every night. Never thought about shelving those books too. Maybe I will start that now. Cool idea everyone.

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

I shelve the books I read as a child.

message 41: by Anna (new)

Anna Absolutely if I've read them, help me to keep track so I can recommend to other children too, and helps my younger ones choose. My older kids do their own selves/reviews too now.

message 42: by Kel (new)

Kel Sta I'd love my daughter to do it herself, but she isn't interested as present, whereas I am!

message 43: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I shelve books I've read as a child and loved. Maybe someday when I have my own children I will be able to pass them on. :)

message 44: by Megan (new)

Megan Of course I do, when it's a book I've read. ;-)

message 45: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Taubert I use it to find books to download to my kindle app for my baby sister.

message 46: by Alie38 (new)

Alie38 I only have because I have a love for some children's books so they are on my all time favorite list...the simplicity of certain stories I think have profound underlying meanings (example: The Cat in the Hat). My husband gives me a new children's book every birthday.

Otherwise, I use only use GR to log in my erotic!

message 47: by Karen (new)

Karen a few outstanding children books...

message 48: by Su (new)

Su Hee, I misread the poll & just now noticed. I shelve my books that are for children, not books belonging to my children. I'm just going to leave my reply, though.

message 49: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I am a mom of two and read book to them all the time but goodreads is just for me. I don't want to share. LOL

message 50: by Tera (new)

Tera To me, Shelving those books makes me feel dirty. Like I'm betraying the sanctity of my own personal time. When I read a book, I do it to escape in a world that is just for me. I become the characters. I can't really become the Cat in the Hat or Mickey Mouse. So for right now, no. Shelving my favorite little person's books is out.
