Faith Since getting my Nexus 7 in August, I have frequently used it for reading. The high ppi makes text very clear and hence, easy to read. I actually sold my Sony Reader PRS-350 because I actually enjoy reading on my tablet more. I just love it! Of course, I use the Nexus for other things too but reading is one of its primary uses.

It really depends on your eyes and the conditions one is reading in. The latest tablets all have very high pixel density, making text very clear. This helps to reduce eye strain. If the backlight from LCD screens is an issue, adjusting the brightness can help a lot. Also, studies looking at this issue have produced mixed results with some saying that there is no difference in eye strain between e-ink screen and LCD screens and others saying that LCD screens produce more. I know some people really have a hard time reading on LCD screens but most people who read e-books apparently do not. I just read a recent study that said that most people read e-books on their phones! Honestly, we stare at LCD screens for most of the day. I imagine that for most people, reading on a tablet or phone isn't going to kill their eyes. Of course, many people prefer e-ink and that is fine. However, I think ultimately each person has to decide which type of device is best for her. Just because LCD screens harm your eyes this does not mean it will do the same to another reader.

M I think I am going blind from too much reading on my tab.. but I just can't stop!!

message 354: by Graham (new)

Graham Cawsey I read magazines on my tablet

Books on my kindle PW1

message 355: by Danyel (new)

Danyel Anastasiou I love my kindle! I use the library to check out tons of books on the kindle, listen to the monotone voice of most of my books while I clean the house, I play on internet on it all the time. I would like a flash drive to do other things, but other than that I love it!

message 356: by Bailey (new)

Bailey Gorman I have an older kindle (not like super old but the type with the little keyboard on it), but I usually just take it with my for traveling, because books take up lots of space, that and sometimes I get really good deals/books I can't find in local stores.

message 357: by Nero (new)

Nero I have an iPad but I seldom use it for reading, I prefer paperbook rather than ebook.

message 358: by Henry (new)

Henry K20 I read all the time on my kindle, Great stuff!

message 359: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Hulsey Yes, I read on a Kindle

message 360: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Hulsey I read on a Kindle and its kind of fun

message 361: by Larry (new)

Larry Page I prefer to read on my iPad mini. I only read a DTB if an e edition is not available.

message 362: by Daniel Ace (new)

Daniel Ace My KindleFire goes everywhere with me. Is there a form of Kindle addiction? ;)

message 363: by Anne (new)

Anne Lyle I prefer my Kobo Glo for reading - I use my iPad+keyboard mainly for writing (but also for twitter, watching movies, etc)

Julie aka trouble.. Yes, I have a kindle fire and I love it...my grown daughter's say I'm addicted to my kindle..lol

message 365: by Bernard (new)

Bernard Campbell I have a Kindle for reading - a tablet though is great for digital comics however I usually use my smart phone as that is easier to hold on the bus to work!

message 366: by Deniz (new)

Deniz Özdemir Even though I have an iPad, I never use it to read a book. Books should be hold and felt. I love keeping the books that I've read in my library. I don't want a Kindle or Nook, I don't want a e-reader and I will never ever use my iPad to read books. I love REAL BOOKS, not the fake letters on the "hd" screen!

message 367: by Allen (new)

Allen Deniz - I honor your right to choose how to read a book. When I was younger (now in my 80's) I could read anything I wished. Then I gravitated to the LARGE PRINT books in the library, or a magnifying glass. Then I discovered e-readers. If I had had one of those while cruising I would not have had to row to all the boats in an anchorage looking for trades because my one foot of shelf space allocated to paperbacks was full. I also can magnify the print up to a comfortable level and read with one hand (the other hand no longer needed to hold the magnifying glass). Dictionary built in means I look up meanings I used to skip. My sense of smell was obliterated by a Big Pharma side effect so my Kindle smells the same as my paper book. I have come to recognize that the words are the "book", not the paper, not the electrons, not the e-ink, crayon, paint or any other medium that conveys words. Perhaps you will be one of the lucky ones that can still read print on paper as you pass the century mark, but if not, then keep an open mind and remember that the book is not the medium, but the content is, no matter how it is displayed. I just hope I never have to learn braille. ;-)

I understand what you mean and you're right but having a library and remembering the joy that you've had while reading each of them by their specific plots every time I take a look to those book shelves makes me feel happy. I believe you know how it feels seeing tons of read books and re-having each adventure only by looking at the shelf...
To keep reading, I can start using tablets in the future but not now. Now is not time for me to give up on those colourful papers...

message 369: by Allen (new)

Allen Deniz, I do have some paper books. Even after you switch to something easier to read, and I hope that day never comes for you, I do understand the pleasure of having them lined up on shelves. I have lots of them on Cancer because most of those are not available in e-book format and I still need the information in them.

Meanwhile I am reading novels on my Kindle and PDF reports on my iPad with an occasional paper book tossed in. It seems like the font in the paper books shrinks as I read, which is strange.

Meanwhile, I hope everyone keeps reading in whatever format they enjoy. I used to hang out in libraries, reading all the magazines that I didn't get at home but I don't do that much any more.

I am now 81, creeping up on 82 with a target of 103 and in reasonably good health. That is still a lot of reading time left.

message 370: by Chris (new)

Chris C I think it's just distracting. I can't read from something electric.

message 371: by Allen (new)

Allen Chris, does this mean you can't read off the TV, or electric billboards or neon signs or a computer screen or a tablet? Or is it just long form, stuff over 200 words say.

message 372: by Graham (new)

Graham Cawsey I have had kindles for years and love them

My iPad 2 I would never use as a book coz it's too heavy

Bought an iPad air two days ago. Light enough to use as an ereader

I've put a couple of hundred comics on it to read

message 373: by Nicolle (last edited Dec 18, 2013 05:37PM) (new)

Nicolle I read in my phone

message 374: by Alison (new)

Alison Parry_jones I enjoy both I read on my tablet and have many books downloaded, but I still enjoy the feel of a real book I still love to go to a bookshop and go to booksales.

message 375: by Nick (new)

Nick Vittum I don't use any of these devices, but I do have several e-reader apps on my laptop, and use them extensively for reading, especially at night in bed. The back-lighting and adjustable font size make reading with aging eyes easier.

message 376: by Stuart (new)

Stuart When e-books are available, I read them on my Kindle.

message 377: by Helena (new)

Helena Mallett I do still love the feel of a physical book in my hands but the ease with which you can instantly download a book of interest makes my iPad the overall winner for reading.

message 378: by Allen (new)

Allen I am reading "The Sisterhood" series on library books. Get on the computer, find the books in the right format, put a hold on them, wait for the phone call, go tet them two or three at a time, bring them home and then lose my place when I fall asleep over the book or drop it with the bookmark not where I was reading. Since I have lost my sense of smell to a large extent from a prescription drug side effect, the smell of the book holds no value for me. Kindle 1, hard cover book 0.

message 379: by Marian (new)

Marian I love my Kindle Paperwhite! This is the 2nd Kindle I've had, and as I received it as a gift, didn't use it for almost a year. Now it goes everywhere I go. I still enjoy holding, smelling, and experiencing print books - and there's nothing like the library, but having my own "library" with me at all times is a fantastic experience.

message 380: by Alison (new)

Alison Lee I greatly prefer a dedicated eReader to a tablet for many, many reasons. The Kindle Paperwhite is currently my jam.

message 381: by Naomie (new)

Naomie I use my Kindle Fire to read books, but I still have my bookshelf in my living room that is filled with all of my paperbacks. Sometimes it's nice to sit back with a real book in hand

message 382: by Allen (new)

Allen I store all the paper books except the cancer books I want to keep at my local library. They have lots of shelf space.

message 383: by April (new)

April Vodde-rose I used to read on my phone but I got a kindle this past Christmas and I LOVE it. I can't imagine going back to reading on my phone again!

message 384: by Nahiyan (new)

Nahiyan Asadullah I have a very cheap tablet and it's doing it fairly well for me! :D

message 385: by Laipa (new)

Laipa Sei As much as I enjoy reading paperbacks and hard cover books, it is fairly impossible to buy every book I want out there. It is much easier to download an ebook. I own a Samsung Galaxy tab and I absolutely love it. It took me a while to find the right app for reading but once I finally found one that fit my preferences, I absolutely love reading on it. It's also less weight to carry around.
It just really convenient. I leave actual books for nice summer nights when on holidays.

message 386: by Toni (new)

Toni Whittaker i bought i kindle fire hd used to have a normal kindle but i read a lot in bed an needed the light the tablet isn't quite the same though think im probably going to get a kindle paper white though at some point in the near future :)

message 387: by Allen (new)

Allen The rumor mill says there is a new Paperwhite coming out that has physical page turn buttons, so it will no longer jump several pages with a single click. If true then I will probably upgrade, but not if it still has the page turn problem for me.

message 388: by Toni (new)

Toni Whittaker i never knew that it had that problem, thats a bit rubbish!!! i might have a look at reviews for some of the other e readers that are out like the kobo glo i know the normal kobo touch is quite good just doesn't have a light

message 389: by Ida (new)

Ida I love to read in my kindle fire <3

message 390: by Geert (new)

Geert Vansintjan I use mainly my normal kindle for reading. A tablet is not a reader

message 391: by Regina (new)

Regina I use my Onyx but there's nothing like a real book. I usually read an ebook and a paper one at the same time.

message 392: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I have a NOOK HD but use it primarily as a quick surf of the web rather than turning on my desktop or laptop. I still prefer the physical feel of a book. It makes me feel more connected to the story. I even like the smell of the paper, the feel of the cover if it has raised areas. Plus, I have a bookcase just for the favorites I save. Looking at those shelves gives me pleasure.

message 393: by Ali (new)

Ali Hamilotn Well, I don't own any thing to read books on. I just read book and never put it down until I am down.

Ali

message 394: by Nancy (new)

Nancy I hate reading regular books any more! When I press on a word, no dictionary or internet pops up...I'm spoiled!

message 395: by Marion (new)

Marion eXactly! what I used to think
! Old Nook Color was a gift, I could not love it more! I still love pbooks - feel/smell/everything, but ereading is wonderful. You an do both, not everything is on digital, so best of both worlds. Try it - you'll love it, nothing to lose.

message 396: by Marion (new)

Marion I could not agree more - there are real advantages to ereaders, no need to give up either. Do both - pbooks and ebooks, I've never read more in my life since I got my Nook Color.

Elaine wrote: "Nah, I much rather prefer the Kindle for it's e-ink but if it's possible, I would still read the actual books. Nothing can replace the feeling of reading real books."

message 397: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a kindle fire, but it's used primarily as a back up pc. I alternate since I brought my laptop back for a bit from the dead and now my kindle suffers from so much web use. If I lose this I'm sol for getting on the internet, but my eyesight is going really bad due to health issues so I've found print to be easier as the tablet increases my vision issues. Otherwise I loved reading on it, but still prefer print.

message 398: by Billy (new)

Billy I have a kindle and 2 iPads. Initially I've always read paperback books. Got hooked on the kindle because it's very light in your hands, you escape into the book so it really doesn't become an issue whether you're holding a physical book vs ebook, and the eink is comparable to paper it's high enough res so you're not squinting but you can adjust the size of the print even (another thing books can't do) and you have a virtual library in your bag.
Ipad is great for magazines and books but the problem is you get distracted easily because the internet is right there! Come on that's too tempting!
So kindle is best and as for the smell of a book??? What are we doing here baking a cake or reading a book? The olfactory sensory input disappears after 10 mins too so smell is a nonfactor. (Really smell???) omg I've got to smell that book it's a best smeller!! ;)

I suppose some people are blessed with a more acute sense of smell than others.
