Maddy They’re making Nightbitch into a movie, no release date yet but I definitely would like to read it first!

Jamie DeHaven-Bartlett I have voted but they all sound good to me!

message 3: by Kara (new)

Kara The author who wrote Carnivore is a great writer and has several others that follow along with this book. I hope it makes this months read, but if it doesn't read it for yourself. IT'S GREAT!!

Readabookmofo Nightbitch sounds super interesting. What Moves the Dead sounds interesting as well and is on my wishlist, but I see it everywhere. I haven't seen Nightbitch until deciding next months reads!

message 5: by Kristy (new)

Kristy Just an FYI, Nightbitch has a
scene that has, to me, severe animal cruelty and abuse. I was so angry and disgusted I wept for the poor animal and wanted to do everything to the woman that she did to her pet cat. I might be more sensitive about this, because I have pets, but animals are basically innocent and have no idea why they are in pain.
I don't feel this strongly about violence or torture towards people in books or movies. I thought I'd mention it, so nobody runs into it blindly like I did. I don't know if the fact that I have pet cats made me more sensitive, but it was horrible to read. If you need to skip it it won't change your reading experience in my opinion. Has anyone else read this book that has an opinion about that part of the book? Am I overreacting or on the nose about the scene?

Thank you so much for the heads up! I don’t think you overreacted and honestly don’t think that’s a thing. Your reaction is yours and true, whatever it is. I for one appreciate the heads up because I can’t handle animal abuse.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if Nightbitch is just a story about transformation or if there are any actual animals that play a central role in the story, and I guess your comment helped answer that question, but... yikes.

Ruth It looks like What Moves the Dead is on track to be the top pick or at least one of the two top picks for March's group read. I recommend first reading Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, which I found to make What Moves the Dead that much more satisfying when I read it last year. It's a great retelling and modernization of House of Usher and essentially bulks up and builds on the character foundation that starts in Poe's imagination.

It's a very good book, IMO, and I liked going into it feeling that I already knew the main characters and it was a chance to get to know them and their neighbors even better!

Thank you for saying so, it was really a shock, because there were no warnings about it anywhere that I read about it. The book description didn't either or I probably wouldn't have read it.
It's a really strange book, because it's ambiguous whether or not there were real physical changes or only psychological. The end was upbeat for the most part I think. I just could not handle the extreme violence and suffering of the poor family cat. I rarely cry over a movie or book, but torturing and killing an innocent creature that loves and trusts you was just far too awful.

Badseedgirl I've already read What Moves the Dead and to be honest Nightbitch just does not appeal to me. So although I voted, I'll probably skip March group read. I did add Animal Kingdom to my TBR so it was not all bad!

What an excellent tip, Ruth. Thank you. I think I will squeeze it in this month to be better prepared.

Cal I hope WMTD wins! Been wanting to read this, can’t wait to do it with everyone! Also gives me that push to start it!

I'm adding ANIMAL KINGDOM to my TBR as well!

message 15: by Kara (new)

Kara Thanks for the info on Nightbitch, I can read just about anything with people who are tortured, etc,but not animals. Unless they are like Cujo. Let's not support animal abuse in our choices.

message 16: by Ash (new)

Ash I love T. Kingfisher, and have been planning on reading What Moves the Dead for a while. But I voted for The Haunting of Caldgrave House in the hopes it would win second, figuring What Moves the Dead would already be doing well in the polls. That being said, this is perfect timing, because What Moves the Dead just went on sale at Chirpbooks for $3.99 for anyone who likes audiobooks.

Hey Liz, I'm glad to share what I learned from my reading experience with WMTD. And The Fall of the House of Usher is a classic - only a 60-ish page book on my Kindle, so it was easy to prioritize and read in advance of T. Kingfisher's book. It was one of those situations after I read House of Usher that I wanted to know a bit more and get some details... then along comes WMTD and voila! My wish was fulfilled. Hope you enjoy both!

T. Kingfisher is a very good storyteller and I think does a nice job with character development; I'm a big fan of What Moves the Dead. But I, like you, voted for The Haunting of Caldgrave House because I thought it was such a novel concept and one of the noms that best fit the theme of a horror book that features a regular animal. I added it to my TBR and look forward to reading on my own... hoping this Amy Cross book will work better for me than the previous one I read: The Ghost of Shapley Hall (2 stars).

I don't think I've read anything by Amy Cross before. But even if the book doesn't win, I'll go and read the sample and decide from there if I still want to read it. The premise definitely sounds like it could be a good one, but I've been duped by a good premise before.

It's looking like our winners are running away from the pack, so unless something drastically changes, I would be up for a Buddy Read of Amy Cross next month.
