Poll
Hi Everyone! We've decided to make a low-key comeback with short(er) stories, and our first author on the list for 1 October, is Gabriel Garcia Marquez. My personal pick is the dense and challenging noir satire, The Autumn of the Patriarch, which deals with Authoritarianism, and is written in a sort of Modernist Magical Realism style and is viewed by many as -the- work that put Magical Realism on the map. Choose it if you dare, and at the same time, you will be able to tick off yet another item on your 1001-Books-You-Must-Read (before you die) list! ;) ...or choose something else if you really had another GGM short you still wanted to do. GGM short write-ins welcome.

Just for the record, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, is one of GGM's most subtle works - as beautifully rendered as it is possible to render tragedy and grief, as it is based on a true story and the author's personal experience. It's really one of my favorites.
On the other hand, somehow, I feel as if Patriarch is more raw and symbolic, might be more of a catharsis because it sort of viscerally paints some of the pain that we're going through in our upside-down world at present. (If you didn't know already, though, it's not easy reading.)

Well, the poll closes today, and it looks like Patriarch might be the winner. I have in the meantime been thinking how many other works we could cross-reference that also deals with authoritarianism, such as Orwell, for example. As far as I know, nobody has done it quite as dramatically as GGM, though, but I might be mistaken.
Since there is so much interest in Chronicle, we might schedule that for later sometime.
I'll set the threads up after the poll officially closes. Thanks to everyone who voted!

There are several famkus works that deal with authoritarianism, the "dictator" novels of Latin America. Several precede GGM. One is Miguel Angel Asturias (Guatemala), El Sr Presidente. Augustk Roa Bastos, (Paraguay), (Eng?) "I, the Supreme".
"The Autumn" is the only work of GGM that I haven't been able to finish (my f2f book club read it a year or two ago).
