You may want to reconsider Giver of Stars. There has been some controversy. Article above.
American Dirt has some controversy, too. I see no reason not to leave them on the poll.

I won't be pulling them from the poll. Both books were nominated and seconded and I often find the controversy surrounding books is a good discussion point.
Yes, it does. My library group has both those books listed for discussion this year.
No issues with you choosing to include either book. I have just found that many readers to see potential plagiarism an issue, so I wanted to let you all know about it. Controversy of a more socio-political nature is a different thing and I definitely agree that it leads to great discussion.
