Is this supposed to be a category for works of fiction? I voted for the Joyce Carol Oates novel because I felt the collection of Indian myths was better suited for a "general" category, more about anthropology and folklore than what we usually think of as fiction.

Our group reads have never been limited to just fiction. As long as a book fits the monthly theme, it’s eligible. Since this poll is between the top runners up from 2018, it’s possibly a bit more of a varied selection than we often get.
